Chapter Thirteen
I paced nervously in the kitchen, trying to count the minutes since Nathaniel left. It had been nearly an hour and a half. They should be back any minute.
âWhy are you so damn nervous?â Mary-Beth asked as she pulled the plates from the cupboard and went to set the four of them on the massive table.
âHave you never met Borden?â I asked as I looked outside at the skies. There was a gray haze in the sky to the north, but it wasnât a full-on storm. âHis emotions can cause volatile weather. His father, who cut him off, just died. You donât expect a little fall out from that?â
Mary-Beth shrugged and leaned against the counter. âI guess I havenât thought about it. Sometimes I think you were meant to have two soul mates. No one reads him quite like you do, Margot.â
I stopped in my tracks at that and my eyes ripped to her.
âDonât say that,â I said around a thick throat.
She shrugged again. âSorry. Itâs just kind of true. Itâs obvious heâs in love with you. And even though you and Nathaniel were clearly made for each other like no one in the history of the planet, you and Borden have thisâ¦jive about you. Iâm just saying.â She held her hands up in surrender.
âCan we please not talk about it?â I said, and with my words, I confirmed everything she had just said, without meaning to. âYouâre not making things any easier. We justâ¦need to be supportive of him, whatever happened.â
Just then, I heard the garage opening and then the sound of the car as it pulled in.
My mouth felt dry and once more, I glanced outside. So far, the gray haze in the sky stayed further north.
That was a good sign.
The door opened, and I heard their footsteps. They stepped around the corner, and my eyes landed on Nathaniel, and then Borden.
âWelcome home,â I said, offering Borden a cautious smile.
He gave me a small, ingenuine one in return.
âDinnerâs ready. Hope everyone is hungry.â
I grabbed one pot and carried it to the table, followed by Mary-Beth and Nathaniel with the rest of the food. We set it all on the table, and we all sat down together.
It had been awkward, but Iâd asked all of the students to make themselves scarce tonight. Theyâd all eaten an early dinner and headed to their bedrooms, or out into town, or to the beach.
Tonight, it just needed to be the four of us, who were all in this together originally.
âHow was your flight?â I asked in mindless conversation as I served my food onto my plate.
âFine,â Borden said with the tiniest of huffs, which told me that he knew exactly what I was doing.
We finished dishing up. Borden grabbed his fork and knife, but just sat there, staring at a blank space on the table.
âMy father knew he was going to die, thatâs why he finally asked to see me,â he said, diving right into it, because he was never one to beat around the bush.
